Reveal and Conceal

“Imagine that there are three doors; the first one is completely closed, the seconde one is completely open, and the third one is half-open. Wich door would you choose?” Hak Min Lee asks. His choice? The third one, no doubt about it. “Because it leaves room for the viewers imagination”.

Putting his hunch to the test, in Reveal and Conceal, he experiments with the interplay between hidden and visible elements and how this affects our curiousity. He visualises this in a large wooden cabinet consisting of a multitude of different-sized drawers. Some are large, others are tiny. Some are completely transparent, made up of only an empty frame, some are completely closed, and others are just the tiniest fraction open.

In short, the cabinet manages to combine two states that are completely at odds with one another: both revealing and concealing at the same time. And this is precisely where we can find the key to unlock our imagination, believes Hak Min.
